This is a very busy unit and very friendly orthopaeadic team with virtually no major department politics

Consultants

  • Upper Limb                          - Mr Woods / Lowdon
  • Foot & Ankle / Paeds           - Mr Williamson / Miss Irby
  • Knee                                    - Mr Deo / Hollinghurst / Jones / Satish
  • Hip                                       - Mr Ivory / Rigby / Brooks
  • Spines                                  - Mr Pyrovolou and Mr Bhatia
  • Orthogeriatric                      - Dr Watson / Woods / Koko (very involved from Day 1 with NOF)

T&O Consultants are on for trauma 1 in 8 while the others do pure elective

Staff grade / Associate specialist

4 permanent surgeons undertaking regular elective work

Trauma coordinator – Assists with logistics of trauma patients on a day to day basis

Juniors

  •  1 in 10 middle grade rota comprising ST3+ and specialty doctors grades
    • Full shift system
    • Regular single night shift midweek / 1 in 10 3-night weekend
    • 2 Oxford / 4 Bristol / 1 London trainees, & 3 trust grade registrar
  • Junior tier comprises mix of physician assistants and traditional F2 / CT

Workload

  • Fracture clinic 
    • Cascard – new patient #clinic 5days/week – on call cons / SpR (20-30 patients)
    • Daily F-up # clinic
  • Trauma Lists - all day list 5 days/week, with half day session on weekends
    • Consultant / SG supervision for all lists
    • good opportunities for operating independently
    • good spectrum of cases
  • NOF Lists – dedicated NOF slot incorporated into an elective list daily
  • Elective – 
    • varies according to team, but ample opportunities for clinics and elective lists in all teams
    • Regular SG elective lists with (usually) straightforward joints etc, good for free session and getting number up

Theatres

  • Large theatre complex with laminar flow systems
  • Good orthopaedic workroom for planning, op notes etc

Wards

  • Aldbourne – Elective admissions (protected ward)
  • Teal -  admissions
  • Day Surgery Unit -
  • Theatre Admission Lounge - admission area for elective admission
  • Surgical Assessment Unit – assessment ward for surgical/T&O emergency admissions

 

Teaching

Daily teaching at 8am with consultant supervised session

·         Monday –

o    Orthogeriatric teaching

·         Tuesday

o    Clinical exam / radiology teaching

·         Wednesday

o   SHO led teaching

·         Thursday

o   Registrar led teaching

·         Friday

o   Audit

o   There is a good audit process within the department linked into the departmental database developed by Mr Lowdon’s

o   Key audit topics related to admission are reviewed
